Organic Eprints
Reckling, Moritz; Döring, Thomas F.; Bloch, Ralf; Stein-Bachinger, Karin; Bachinger, Johann.

Pommer, G.

Crop management of linseed Organic Eprints
Alföldi, Thomas.
What should you bear in mind to successfully cultivate linseed in terms of location, varieties, tillage, fertilisation, crop rotation, maintenance and harvesting? In particular, its low nutrient demand and the high market demand make linseed an interesting specialty crop for organic farms. Thomas Frei sums up his experience of having cultivated organic linseed for ten years. Hansueli Brasselsberg and Hans-Georg Kessler (Biofarm) and linseed producer Mischa Scherer provide further statements. The film was realised in Brütten, Canton of Zurich, at the Swiss Bioackerbautag. The Bioackerbautag is an annual event in Switzerland including field visits, variety trials, information on cultivation and machinery demonstrations.

Crop Management of Rapeseed and Pollen Beetle Control Organic Eprints
Alföldi, Thomas.
Rapeseed stays in the field for eleven months. During this time, there are various threats that an organic farmer has to pay attention to in order to achieve good yields. In the first part of the video, FiBL researcher Claudia Daniel summarizes the main recommendations on variety selection, fertilisation, cultivation system as well as disease and pest control. Farmer Michel Arn shares his experiences with organic rapeseed cultivation. In the second part, Claudia Daniel and Deborah Kaiser (Agroscope) provide insight into ongoing research on pollen beetle (Rapsglanzkäfer) control using aromatic substances and entomophagous fungi. Hans-Georg Kessler (Biofarm) explains the economic aspect and shows that the good producer price compensates for occasional...

Cultivating a diverse wheat population suitable for low-input and organic farming Organic Eprints
Caldbeck, Janie.
The Population produces more stable yields than those of the parent varieties due to more efficient use of soil nutrients and water, and lower plant disease and pest levels. When compared to the parent varieties, it produces yields of higher quality; increased protein content, improved hardness, good baking quality, comparable nutrition levels, and it is suitable for animal feed. Practical recommendation • The Population is most suitable for growing in low input or organic systems (under high input conditions it maintains its stability, but could yield significantly lower than pure line varieties). • It is able to adapt to changing environmental and weather conditions and cope with variation in diseases and weeds. To further increase crop resilience,...

Desenvolvimento rural e práticas tradicionais de agricultores familiares: o caso do milho no vale do Capivari, Santa Catarina, Brasil. Organic Eprints
Rebollar, Paola Beatriz May; Miller, Paul Richard Momsen; Carmo, Victor Barbosa do.

Direct Sowing of Maize Organic Eprints
Alföldi, Thomas; Böhler, Daniel; Dierauer, Hansueli; Hegglin, Django; Böhler, Josef; Breiter, Hanspeter.
In organic farming, the plough is generally used in maize cultivation because it provides a simple way to control weed. Unfortunately, regarding soil erosion, compaction and runoff, ploughing is especially harmful in maize cultivation. Direct sowing of maize could largely solve these problems. The video presents the technique of direct sowing of maize, for example in a field of rolled field pea. In the last years, FiBL tests have shown that under optimal conditions, the direct sowing of maize in organic farming is possible without significant yield losses.

Direct sowing with green manure Organic Eprints
Apostolov, Stoylko; Kirov, P.; Tihov, N..
Practical recommendations > After harvesting the main crop (cereals or rape), perform the stubble cultivation in August. > Sow the wheat‐legume mixture – winter forage peas and wheat (triticale) – by mid‐October. > At the end of May, grind the cover crop (mixture) with a roller crimper, then sow the corn with a direct sowing machine (drill). The mulch lying on the soil surface should dry before sowing. > The mulch reduces mineralization, so it might be better to use nitrogen fertilizer in the row.

No-till cultivation of maize in rolled forage peas Organic Eprints
Dierauer, Hansueli; Siegrist, Franziska; Weidmann, Gilles.
The non-tilled, constantly covered soil has improved water retention and also shows a better carrying capacity during harvest, and is less affected by weed infestation, compaction, nutrient-leaching, and erosion. Stockless farms especially benefit from the nitrogen input of the legume-green manure. • At the beginning of August, carry out 1 to 2 stubble-tillage operations after cereal or rape harvest. • Sow the wintering forage peas in October. • At the end of May, kink the peas' stems with a knife-cylinder roller, after which you drill in the maize with row cleaners. The green manure lying on the ground must be properly dried off for sowing. • The mineralisation performance, lowered due to the soil cover, can be compensated for with focused nitrogen...
